Meet the team behind Komaali Kings, featured panelists at Lanka Comic Con 2018

This is Komaali Kings, கோமாளி கிங்ஸ்) (or Clown Kings in English), Sri Lanka's first mass-budgeted, Tamil-language films in over 40 years! The last Sri Lankan Tamil-language film to be released island-wide on this scale was Komaligal, in 1976.

This black-comedy thriller has been written and directed by King Ratnam (and is also his directorial debut). Komali Kings is co-produced by Ganesh Deivanayagam, Bawadharani Rajasingham and R. Selvaskandan for Picture This Motions.

The film, starring Raja Ganeshan, Kamala Sri Mohan, Darshan Dharmaraj, Gajan Kanesshan, Niranjani Shanmugaraja, Sathiyapriya Ratnasaamy along with King Ratnam in the lead role, opened to positive reviews and to much acclaim from it's Tamil-language audience.

Inspired by Komaligal, the story of Komali Kings revolves around Siva Sithambaram (played by Raja Ganesan), an average next-door neighbour whose mundane life takes a hilarious turn when a distant relative, Pat (played by King Ratnam) and his family from London, decide to stay with him for the duration of their trip, in order to attend a family wedding.

The film was shot Jaffna, Batticaloa, Malayagam and Colombo. The team behind the movie worked hard to ensure that the casting encompassed a mixture of Tamil and Sinhala races, as well as Hindu, Muslim and Christianity cultures, in order to reflect unity between the different ethinic groups in the country.

ලංකා කොමික් කොන් අරමුදලට ඇමෙරිකානු රාජ්‍ය දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව මගින් ලාභ නොලබන කොමික් මුද්‍රණාලයක් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පටන් ගැනීමට ප්‍රතිපාදනක් ලබා දී තිබෙනවා. මේ මුද්‍රණාලය භාශා තුනෙන්ම නිර්මාණ ඉදිරිපත් කරන කලා හා සාහිත්‍යමය නිර්මාණකරුවන් හට අගනා කරළියක් වනු ඇත.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ බොහෝම අවස්ථාවල අපි කොමික් වල 'පළමුවන මුද්‍රිත වෙළුම' දැක තිබුනට  ඒ මාලාව 'දෙවන වෙළුමක්' දක්වා යනවා අපි දකින්නේ බොහොම කලාතුරකිනි. දේශීය චිත්‍ර ශිල්පීන්ට හා කථා රචකයන්ට තියන ප්‍රධානම ගැටළුව වන්නේ වියදම් අභියෝගයන්ය. මේ හේතුව නිසා බොහෝ කලාකරුවන් තමන්ගේ නිර්මාණය ගැන කල්පනා කරන්නේ, ඔවුන්ගේ එදිනෙදා රැකියාවට යෑමට සැරසෙන විට කැඩපත දිහා බලා අතීතය අනුස්මරණය කරන විටය.

හැබැයි ඒ තත්වය අපට වෙනස් කළ හැකි නම්? මුද්‍රණ වියදම් ප්‍රබල ලෙස අඩු කරන්න අපිට හැකි වුනා නම්?

තිලානි අපට පැවසුවේ "මම මුද්‍රණ යන්ත්‍ර වල මිල ගණන් හා ඒවා වල තාක්ෂණික දත්ත පිළිබඳවත් ඒවා වල නියම ප්‍රමිතීන් හා එයට වැඩි පරිමාවක මුද්‍රණ කටයුතු දරාගන්න පුළුවන්ද යන දේවල් ගැන හොඳින් සොයා බැලුවා." කියාය. "මම පිටකොටුවට පවා ගියේ කඩදාසි සපයන්නවුන්ට කථා කර තොග මිල ගණන් සටහන් කර ගැනීමටය. මගේ වැඩකට නැති සැමියාද මැසිවිලි කිව් නමුත් කෙසේ හෝ මා සමඟ  හැම තැනටම ආවා."

දීර්ග කාලීන ස්වයංපෝශිත, අඩු පිරිවැයක් දරන මුද්‍රණාලයකට අවශ්‍ය ව්‍යාපාර ආකෘතිය  මදින් මද ඇය ගොඩ නැගුවා.

ඇමෙරිකානු මධ්‍යස්ථානය

ඇමෙරිකානු රාජ්‍ය තාන්ත්‍රික කාර්යාලයේ ජොශුවා ශෙන් මහතා අපට මෙහිදී මහත් උපකාරී වූවා. ඔහු මෙම අදහස ගැන බොහෝ උනන්දු වුනා. වසර ගණනක අර්බුදකාරී තත්වයන්ට මුහුණ දුන් ලංකාවේ ප්‍රජාවන් එකතු කිරීමට කොමික් කලාව තුලින් තරුණ පරපුරට හැකි වේවි යැයි ඔහු විශ්වාස කරනවා. ඔවුන්ට අපට උදව් කළ හැකි බව තහවුරු කළ ඔහු එයට ඉල්ලුම් කළ හැකි ක්‍රියා පිළිවෙත අනුගමනය කරන මෙන් පමණක් අපෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටියා. අපි අධෛර්ය වූ අවස්ථා වලදී පවා එම කාර්යන් දිගටම කරගන යන්න ඔහු අපව නිතර නිතර දිරි ගැන්වූවා.

අපි කිසිම කෙනෙක් ඒ වන විට ප්‍රතිදාන සඳහා අයදුම් ලියා තිබුනේ නෑ. එම අත්දැකීම ටිකක් මේ වගේ දනුනා අපිට..

අ-සාමාන්‍ය (Extra-Ordinary)

ලංකා කොමික් කොන් මුද්‍රණාලය මගින් පිට කරන ප්‍රථම කොමික් කථා මාලාව වන්නේ අ-සාමාන්‍ය (Extra-Ordinary) කථා පෙළයි. මෙය වර්තමාන ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සිදුවනු ලබන අද්භූත සිද්ධි වටා ගෙතුන ප්‍රබන්ධයකි.

දැනට නිමවෙමින් පවතින අ-සාමාන්‍ය (Extra-Ordinary) කථා පෙළේ රූප සටහන් 

"මම කීර්තිමත් ප්‍රකාශකයින් පිට කරන කොමික් වලට හුඟක් ආශා කළාට ඒ කිසිම කථා පෙළක්  මගේ සංස්කෘතිය නියෝජනය කරන ඒවා නෙවෙයි," තිලානි අපට පැවසුවා. "මට ලියන්න අවශ්‍ය කරලා තිබුනේ ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයින් හැටියට අපි කවුද කියන එක, අපේ ඉතිහාසය හා සංස්කෘතිය නිර්දේශනය කරන ගමන්, නූතන ආරකින් ගෙන හැර පෙන්විය හැකි දෙයක්."

අ-සාමාන්‍ය කථාමාලාව භාෂා තුනෙන්ම රචනය කිරීමෙන් සත්‍ය වශයෙන්ම ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකත්වය එම  ප්‍රබන්ධයට ලබා දීමට තිලානි බලාපොරොත්තු වෙනවා. ලංකා කොමික් කොන් මුද්‍රණාලය විසින් පරිවර්තන සේවාවන්ද ලබා දෙනු ඇත.

නිමේශ් නියෝමාල් නැමැති 'අ-සාමාන්‍ය' කොමික් කථා පෙළේ චිත්‍ර ශිල්පියා අපිට පැවසුවේ, "ලංකාවේ දැනට බොහෝ නවක තරුණ කොමික් චිත්‍ර ශිල්පීන් බිහි වෙමින් පවතිනවා."  ඔහු විසින් මීට පෙර 'ද ග්‍රේ වෝකර්' යන නමින්ද කොමික් කථා පෙළක්ද ඉදිරිපත් කර තියෙනවා. "මේ නවකයින් ඩිජිටල් ප්‍රකාශණ වලට පමණක් යොමු වෙන්නේ, මුද්‍රණ ගාස්තු හා පිරිවැයන් අධික නිසාවෙනි. ඒ වුනත් නියම කොමික් කියන දේ කඩදාසියක මුද්‍රණය වෙන්න  ඕනේ  කියලා මම විශ්වාස කරනවා."

නිමේශ් නියෝමාල් විසින් අඳින ලද, ඩයනා 

අපි 2017 ලංකා කොමික් කොන් හිදී අ-සාමාන්‍ය (Extra-Ordinary) කොමික් කථා පෙළ දියත් කරන්න බලාපොරොත්තු වෙනවා. දියත් කිරීම සිදු නොවුනත් ඒ පිළිබඳ සාකච්ඡා කිරීමට එහි නිර්මාතෘ වරු කොමික් කොන් මුද්‍රණාලයත් සමඟ එකතු වන්නට බලාපොරොත්තු වෙනවා.

මුද්‍රන ගාස්තු ගැන ප්‍රසිද්ධියේ කථා කරන්න අපි තවම සූදානම් නොවුනත්, ප්‍රබල මිල අඩු තත්වයක් බලාපොරොත්තු වෙන්න ඔබට පුළුවන්. මෙමගින් අපට වෙළඳසල් හා බෙදාහැරීමේ මිල දාරයන් එකතු කළ පසුත් පාඨකයින්ට අඩු මිලකට උසස් තත්වයේ දේශීය කොමික් පොත් මිලදී ගැනීමට හැකිවනු ඇත.

අද මම ඉතා ආඩම්බර 'වැඩකට නැති සැමියෙක්' වෙමි.

We toured Colombo this morning (and made a child cry).

In pouring rain, cosplayers, journalists, and volunteers assembled this morning to tour Colombo.

St Theresa's Church

So we gathered here, which may not have been the wisest thing given that we had a bunch of people cosplaying as the Undead. They didn't seem to mind though - and we left before we could get into trouble. 

This would be a theme throughout the day. 

Anim8

First we dropped by the good folk at Anim8. They seemed pretty excited, especially the guys n the print shop who were like giddy girls at a Boy Band concert (when I beckoned for the them to come out and join everyone else taking pictures though, they ran and hid). 

Amaal Mansour, Anim8's second in command, gave us our lovely banner. 

Savoy Theater - EAP 

Next we visited the Savoy Theater. I'm not sure how the bus managed those turns, but it made it to Wellawatte. The folks at the Savoy were quite jazzed, though the general public's reaction were more mixed. 

"[The cosplayers] wanted to fight her, her words," said Innocent Bystander, Shanil Wannakuwatte, of his traumatized young daughter. In proper Sri Lankan fashion, the aggrieved party was bought off (in this case, with Pringles).

Pringles is the official Snack Partner of Lanka Comic Con 2016.

The Colombo Lighthouse

At the lighthouse, we went up on the steps to take some shots. Directly behind and of little interest (you will notice I have not bothered to feature it in any images below) is a lighthouse no one cares about. Except for one, tiny, guard, who came out with an assault rifle (maybe he was scared the Undead would bite him?), and told us we couldn't take pictures. 

So we send him to go to talk to Thilani, back at the bus. In the meanwhile, we finished taking all our pictures. He came back to shoo us away, but by then, we were already leaving. 

When we left, I waved to Napoleon.
Sadly, he did not wave back. 

Dutch Hospital

This was unpleasant. We went with a Colombo City Tours bus, because they had all the approvals in place so that we could shoot in public areas (let's set aside for now, that approvals are needed to shoot in public areas). 

The security guard who then came out, told us we had to stop. However, he had no issue with all the white people taking pictures around us. The war on Sri Lankan-hating, Sri Lankan security guards was not what we signed up for that day, so we went on about our business. 

This did involve trying to get into the World Trade Center, where they were quite surprised and nervous, but did let us shoot in a corner. 

Independence Square

Things went very well here. We were well received, security gave us no trouble, and Ushan Gunasekera shot the upcoming Lanka Comic Con Calendar. 

Also, there was this. 

Never have I seen such chemistry between a woman who spoke no English, and a man with no face. 

I call this, "Deadpool: A Love Story."

Jason Rajasinghe was (this) Deadpool. You will know him from the amazing Deadpool Valentine's Day video from IFilm Sri Lanka.

Rahal Wijewardene (LCC 2015 volunteer! Hooray!) from Pulse.lk came by, and livestreamed this little video, talking to cosplayers and asking us about the upcoming events for Lanka Comic Con, 2016.
