Evidence is in the link below. Be cautioned: it is very disturbing reading. It is hard to believe that there are people like this in the world. But, there are. And this is what they do.https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1DUO7l1ElxuI6uUIOqrOGy8UYsRGVtt5c?usp=sharingThis wasn’t friendly teasing or childish drama. They went out of their way to bully, shame, and isolate others.

Let us be perfectly clear. There is no gray area here. This was cruel, intentional abuse, and they knew exactly what they were doing. We are keeping this post and Drive link of evidence up, to assist those gathering evidence for prosecution.

Lanka Comic Con’s Ethical Position in this Matter

Lanka Comic Con is a community built on inclusivity, creativity, and mutual respect. Over the years, we have worked tirelessly to nurture a safe, vibrant space for geeks of all forms and artists at various levels of expression. Harassment and toxic rhetoric—whether online or offline—are in direct opposition to everything we stand for.

We take a zero-tolerance stance on all forms of harassment. When individuals engage in behavior that endangers the mental health or physical safety, which destroys the dignity of self, they are not just violating community guidelines—they are breaking the fundamental unity that holds our space together.

The bans detailed in this article result from serious and substantiated behavior that has caused real harm. Even though it is a circumstance that has happened outside our spaces, we do not take such actions lightly. We would like to omit such influences from coming into our safe spaces.

Our goal is not just to protect the present well-being of our community but also to ensure that the next generation that inherits a space is kinder and more resilient.

We urge other brands and partners to join us in upholding these standards for the good of our collective future. We hope other events of parallel interest can also join this effort.

If you or someone you know has been affected by harassment in this space, please know that you are not alone. We stand with survivors, and we will always choose safety over silence.

  • Retraction Regarding Contest at the Costume Ball

We apologize for promoting this contest, as part of our Halloween event. It was our understanding it applied to Sri Lanka. However, it does not.

It is entirely our responsibility to vet third party suggestions before putting them on our page. We are changing how we share such content, to protect our fans.

    – Thilani Samarasinha,
    Principal Organizer, Lanka Comic Con

While we are having the costume ball as stated previously, we are retracting our announcement for the following competition. Sri Lankans are not eligible.

  • Hitler Talks About Cosplay at Lanka Comic Con

    Cosplay Contest

Lanka Comic Con will not hold a cosplay competition at the Asus Lanka Comic Con 2017. Hitler will tell you why, above.

We were not too keen to hold it last year, for the same reason, and after the results from 2016, we have decided to go with our gut.

Other parties (vendors and partners) have talked about holding  their own cosplay competitions at the event and that’s fine.

Edit: There will be a ramp for cosplayers to walk. There will be two walks on each day, morning and evening. ALL cosplayers get to walk – there is no shortlisting.

    Safety

We are going to have a lot more space that last year, which will do a great deal to reduce the chance of accidents. However, please be considerate with your cosplay props. Ask a friend: “do you think this is too dangerous?” If they pause before answering, then that means yes, it is.

Also, at the event, be careful with your props. If you run around waving a sword – the made of metal kind – we will confiscate it and give it back to you at the end of the day.

If we think a prop is just too dangerous, period (metal wolverine claws), it does not matter how they’re handled. We’ll make a decision then and there, whether or not to ask you to put them away, or keep them with us until you go on stage.

    Harassment

If you see someone being harassing or inappropriate, tell a Comic Con volunteer or organizer. We’re going to have volunteers going around specifically asking people if they have been harassed, or seen other people being harassed. Please don’t wait till the event is over to put it in the feedback form: we need to know as soon as you see it, or experience it. No one gets to harass anyone, at Comic Con.

    Attire

If you’re a guy wearing spandex, make sure your bros are properly concealed. If not, we’ll tell you at the ticket booth — but, we’d rather not have to.

That’s pretty much it. See you all soon!

Special thanks to Jeevan Sukumaran for helping with the Hitler video, and WWHD? advice.

  • The Bus Mob is This Weekend.

On Saturday (the 29th) the bus mob gets going.

If you want to see the mob:

Please scroll down to 11:30am, Crescat Mall, the ASUS, Republic of Gamers, Qualifier. We’d love for you to join us at Crescat for pictures and games. It will also be the last chance to get the All Access badges for the Asus Lanka Comic Con 2017.

If you’re cosplaying, a guardian, or media traveling with the mob:

Edit: The bus mob is now full.

Media, please use this link, instead.

    9am, St Theresa’s Church

Thimbirigasyaya, Colombo 5. Media, cosplayers, and cosplayer guardians, please meet here by 8:30am. The bus is leaving at 9am, sharp.

If you do miss the bus, please try and meet up with us, at one of the stops.

    9:15am, Anim8

We drop by Anim8, our print partner, to pick up our banners. You can also ask the owner, Dinesh, if it’s true that he can drag a Nissan Patrol behind him, just for fun (it is, but you want to see the video).

    9:30am, Cruising

We be rolling. They be hating.

    10:30am, Sri Junarathna Orphanage, Bambalapitiya

The orphanage said the kids like chocolate eclairs and milk from a specific shop. So, we’ll be picking those up (in character), and taking them over. We’re going to spend some time with the kids: you judge a community by how it treats its most vulnerable members.

Please indulge me, though. I will never have another chance, to reference this:

11:30am, Crescat Mall, the ASUS, Republic of Gamers, Qualifier

We’re finishing up at Crescat Mall, at the Republic of Gamers (ROG) event. We’ll be having some games and competitions, and this will be last chance for people to get All Access badges to Lanka Comic Con.

That’s pretty much it. See you on the bus.

Lanka Comic Con will be held at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Center, on August 26th and 27th.

    Come be yourself!

  • We toured Colombo this morning (and made a child cry).

In pouring rain, cosplayers, journalists, and volunteers assembled this morning to tour Colombo.

    Deadpool: A Love Story

    St Theresa’s Church

So we gathered here, which may not have been the wisest thing given that we had a bunch of people cosplaying as the Undead. They didn’t seem to mind though – and we left before we could get into trouble.

This would be a theme throughout the day.

    Anim8

First we dropped by the good folk at Anim8. They seemed pretty excited, especially the guys n the print shop who were like giddy girls at a Boy Band concert (when I beckoned for the them to come out and join everyone else taking pictures though, they ran and hid).

Amaal Mansour, Anim8’s second in command, gave us our lovely banner.

    Savoy Theater – EAP

Next we visited the Savoy Theater. I’m not sure how the bus managed those turns, but it made it to Wellawatte. The folks at the Savoy were quite jazzed, though the general public’s reaction were more mixed.

“[The cosplayers] wanted to fight her, her words,” said Innocent Bystander, Shanil Wannakuwatte, of his traumatized young daughter. In proper Sri Lankan fashion, the aggrieved party was bought off (in this case, with Pringles).

    Speaking of Pringles…

Pringles is the official Snack Partner of Lanka Comic Con 2016.

I have eaten many, many, Pringles today.
    Many.

    The Colombo Lighthouse

At the lighthouse, we went up on the steps to take some shots. Directly behind and of little interest (you will notice I have not bothered to feature it in any images below) is a lighthouse no one cares about. Except for one, tiny, guard, who came out with an assault rifle (maybe he was scared the Undead would bite him?), and told us we couldn’t take pictures.

So we send him to go to talk to Thilani, back at the bus. In the meanwhile, we finished taking all our pictures. He came back to shoo us away, but by then, we were already leaving.

When we left, I waved to Napoleon.
Sadly, he did not wave back.

    Dutch Hospital

This was unpleasant. We went with a Colombo City Tours bus, because they had all the approvals in place so that we could shoot in public areas (let’s set aside for now, that approvals are needed to shoot in public areas).

The security guard who then came out, told us we had to stop. However, he had no issue with all the white people taking pictures around us. The war on Sri Lankan-hating, Sri Lankan security guards was not what we signed up for that day, so we went on about our business.

This did involve trying to get into the World Trade Center, where they were quite surprised and nervous, but did let us shoot in a corner.

    Independence Square

Things went very well here. We were well received, security gave us no trouble, and Ushan Gunasekera shot the upcoming Lanka Comic Con Calendar.

    Also, there was this.

Never have I seen such chemistry between a woman who spoke no English, and a man with no face.

I call this, “Deadpool: A Love Story.”

Jason Rajasinghe was (this) Deadpool. You will know him from the amazing Deadpool Valentine’s Day video from IFilm Sri Lanka.

You will be hearing more soon about Jason, Banu, and the rest of the amazing IFilm team.

Rahal Wijewardene (LCC 2015 volunteer! Hooray!) from Pulse.lk came by, and livestreamed this little video, talking to cosplayers and asking us about the upcoming events for Lanka Comic Con, 2016.
